DOROTHY’S STORMY LAKE

This story is based on the book, Dorothy’s Stormy Lake, written by Joan Wooliver, the daughter of Kootenay Lake pioneers Dorothy and Bobby Graham Brown.  In 1930 the newly-wed Graham Browns settled in a remote place called Deanshaven located north of Kootenay Bay.

Excerpt:
“The life that Dorothy and Bobby Graham Brown chose was unlike anything they had known before. Dorothy had a masters degree from the University of California; she had studied art in Belgium, taught school in the Philippines and travelled througout the workd.  Bobby had studied horticulture and then purchased property on the shores of Kootenay Lake, British Columbia, with plans to become a self-sufficient farmer

“There were two things that Dorothy and Bob did not know when they stepped ashore on the rocky beach at Deanshaven in early 1930.  First was the awesome size and power of Kootenay Lake, a lake that took the lives of those unwise or impatient enough to not respect it. The second thing they didn’t know was that the affects of the Great Depression were beginning to be felt even in places as remote as the Kootenays.  These two forces, the lake and the changing economy, would change Dorothy and Bob’s best laid plans again and again.”
